Settling In

Hello,

Well, the weather has been "a bit dodgy" recently with off and on rain the past three days, and the temperature has definitely been dropping. Things are staring to settle down into more of a routine now that registration is mostly complete - although "settle down" wrongly implies that things were once hectic. I think that except for exams and football games, things are hardly ever hectic over here. The pace of life, even in a city, is great.

I met my flatmates and they all seem pretty nice. There are 5 separate flats in my house including my own. Lizz (from Ireland), Kat, and Amy are all medical students who are getting ready to graduate this year. Dan is the last tenant, but I've only run into him once so far.

Today I went to the PROGRESS (PostGrad Researchers Social Society) luncheon which reminded me oh so much of IEEE gatherings (fond memories; we all had different names for those gatherings - 'geekweek,' 'nerdfest' - but they retain a very special place in our hearts). I'm guessing that quite a few of us went simply to have an answer for the "What extracurricular or social activities, if any, were you involved in?" interview question - I know I did. I am, of course, joking and exaggerating; everyone was pretty nice and mostly normal.

But 'normal' is a tricky word here in a European city... I've seen more than one mullet, Mohawk, pink/orange/purple hair people, and dudes-in-tight-trousers. I, however, still only have three pairs of trousers (pants = underwear in UK, FYI): jeans, Carhart jeans, and khakis. The rest are somewhere over the Atlantic... or maybe on the bottom; I'm not sure at this point.

I had my first formal meeting with my advisor today, so I finally have a little bit of direction in my research. For the next few months, I'll be building my literature review.

Um. I think that's all the new news for now. I'll keep you posted.

Sincerely,
Will

Belated interior design tip: Look around for some sort of rug. I can't quite tell from the pictures but it looks like your floor is bare, and I think you'll appreciate a footrug in the colder weather.
